Hermes Agent on Mac Studio M3 Ultra

Verdict

Overkill for Hermes Agent itself, but a credible setup if you specifically want a single workstation that hosts Hermes alongside heavy local LLM workloads (Llama 3.3 70B at 22 tok/s, simultaneous browser automation, large-context retrieval). Diminishing returns vs M4 Pro Mac Mini for most pocket AI use cases.

Setup notes

Same as Mac Mini M4 setup but with the 192 GB unified memory headroom you almost certainly do not need for Hermes alone. The reason to buy a Studio is the LLM, not the agent runtime.

Performance

Idle: 30W. Sustained heavy workload: 215W peak. Llama 3.3 70B Q4 at 22 tok/s is the headline benchmark.

What breaks

  • Linux-only stacks (Asahi not yet production)
  • Cost-sensitive single-purpose deployments
