Verdict
Don't pick — you might want both. Pi 5 as edge endpoint, Mac Mini M4 as desk-side primary host. Together: €1,200 of hardware that runs more useful AI than €5,000 of cloud spend over 24 months.
Notes
- The Pi 5 is real but it's not a Mac Mini. Don't expect 7B+ model performance from it.
- Mac Mini's macOS lock-in is real — Asahi Linux is impressive but not yet production-grade.
- Hardware buying patterns: most pocket AI deployments end up with both eventually.
