Side-by-side
| Axis | OpenClaw | ZeroClaw |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | 10 min including API key setup. | 30 min – 2 hours including model downloads (tens of GB). |
| Security model | Sandbox-on, but cloud API calls leave your machine. | Network egress denied at iptables level. Truly local. |
| Model support | Cloud-first: Claude, GPT, Gemini. | Local: Llama 3.3, Qwen 2.5, Mistral 8x22B. |
| Cost | $5/mo VPS + $50–500/mo AI API. | $0 recurring for LLM, but $4k+ hardware floor or $200/mo for GPU rental. |
| Ecosystem | Large. | Smaller. Local-model agent space is younger. |
| Best for | Most users. Cloud LLMs are still the capability frontier. | When data residency is non-negotiable or local-model bills are cheaper at scale. |
Verdict
Privacy and capability are tradeoffs in 2026, not yet free. ZeroClaw if your data can't leave the machine. OpenClaw if you'd rather pay Anthropic than buy a Mac Studio.
Notes
- Local models trail Claude meaningfully on multi-step planning. Plan for it.
- ZeroClaw's offline RAG is genuinely useful even for users who otherwise use cloud LLMs.
- AGPL-3.0 license matters if you plan to host ZeroClaw as a service.
